When you visit the traffic alerts page for Sri Lanka on any work day, you find that almost all the pushpins on the map are clustered in and around Colombo. These pushpins denote traffic hotspots. On a normal business day, there's hardly any traffic reported from the provincial cities and towns. During long weekends a few of the map markers might get relocated to a place a like Kandy. The Christmas holidays resulted in quite a few traffic jams being reported from both Kandy and Kurunegala. But that's nothing at all compared to what we have just seen over the Sinhala/Tamil new year.
As you can see from the image above, there isn't a single traffic jam reported from the city of Colombo during this time. That is because the streets have been literally empty during this time period.
